Tucked away in the heart of Raleigh, the Raleigh Rose Garden is one of my favorite hidden gems for capturing heartfelt family moments. With its peaceful pathways, blooming roses, and soft natural light, it offers the perfect blend of elegance and charm — especially for families looking for timeless, relaxed portraits.
Recently, I had the joy of photographing a beautiful family at this serene spot, and I couldn’t have asked for a better day. The weather was perfect, the light was golden, and the garden was still showing off the last of its colorful blooms.
When Are the Roses in Bloom?
The roses at the Raleigh Rose Garden typically bloom from mid-May through early fall, with peak bloom in late May to mid-June. However, you can often find beautiful blooms lasting into September, depending on the weather and maintenance.
Best Time to Photograph at Raleigh Rose Garden:
- Peak bloom: Late May – Mid June
- Still blooming: Through July and August
- Lingering blooms: Early September
For family or maternity sessions with a lush floral backdrop, late spring to early summer is the most reliable time to go.
Why I Love Photographing at the Raleigh Rose Garden
This location is a dream for photographers and families alike. Not only is it visually stunning, but it’s also quiet, easy to access, and full of small corners that create a feeling of intimacy and warmth in every photo.
Whether your kids love to explore and be silly, or you’re envisioning a more posed, traditional look, the garden gives us space for both — and it looks incredible in every season. The vibrant flowers, natural stone amphitheater, and tree-lined paths offer a variety of backdrops within walking distance.
And yes — parking is free and right outside the garden entrance!
Planning Your Family Session at the Raleigh Rose Garden
If you're considering booking a session here, here are a few helpful tips to make the most of it:
Best Time of Day:
I always recommend shooting during golden hour (around one hour before sunset) for that soft, magical glow.
What to Wear:
Neutral tones, soft pastels, and rich fall colors all photograph beautifully here. Think earthy tones, flowy fabrics, and minimal patterns. All of my clients receive a prep guide and access to my exclusive online styling tool to help you coordinate your family’s outfits with ease.
What to Bring:
- A neutral-colored blanket for seated poses
- A favorite (photo-friendly) toy for little ones
- Water and snacks (always snacks!)
- Comfortable shoes for little ones to walk between spots
