Fall family photos in Raleigh, Cary, Apex, and throughout the Triangle are some of my favorite sessions of the year.

There is something about North Carolina in the fall—the warm light, golden grasses, changing leaves, cooler evenings, and the way children naturally want to run, explore, and play—that makes this season incredibly special for family photography.
But planning fall family photos can also feel overwhelming.
When should you book?
What should everyone wear?
Where should you have your session?
What happens if the weather changes?
And how do you make sure the photos feel natural instead of overly posed?
I'm here to make all of that easier.
As a Raleigh family photographer, I create relaxed, beautiful fall photography experiences for families throughout Raleigh and the surrounding Triangle area. My goal isn't simply to photograph everyone smiling at the camera. It's to document your family as you are right now—the connection, personalities, laughter, movement, and little moments you'll want to remember years from now.
Why Fall Is Such a Beautiful Time for Family Photos
Fall in the Raleigh area is a short and beautiful season. The landscape begins changing gradually, and the timing of the most colorful foliage can vary from year to year. That means your fall photos don't have to depend on having perfectly orange and red trees.
Some of my favorite fall images are created with:
- Golden grasses
- Warm evening light
- Green and changing foliage
- Open fields
- Woodland paths
- Seasonal flowers
- Beautiful textures and natural surroundings
- The warm colors that begin appearing throughout the Triangle
And sometimes, the best fall photograph doesn't even have a brightly colored tree in it.
It's your child laughing while running toward you.
It's siblings holding hands.
It's the way your partner looks at your children.
It's everyone sitting together and laughing at something completely unplanned.
Those are the moments that make your gallery yours.
When Should You Book Your Fall Family Photos?
Fall is one of the busiest photography seasons of the year, so I recommend planning early.
For families hoping for colorful fall foliage, dates are often concentrated around the later part of October and into November. However, the exact timing of the leaves changes every year.
That's why I don't want you to feel like you have to predict the perfect weekend.
I'll help you choose a date and location based on the look you're hoping for, and I keep a close eye on the seasonal conditions as your session approaches.
Want the classic fall look?
We can plan around locations with beautiful trees and changing foliage.
Prefer a more natural, editorial look? Golden fields, tall grasses, soft greenery, and beautiful evening light can create gorgeous images without relying on colorful leaves.
Want something completely different?
I offer a variety of seasonal fall experiences, so we can choose something that feels like your family. Choosing the Right Fall Photography Experience. Not every family wants the same thing. Some families want a quick seasonal update with a few beautiful portraits. Others want more time to relax, explore, interact, and create a complete gallery.
That's why I offer different fall experiences.
Fall Minis
A great option if you're looking for a shorter, simple way to update your family portraits for the season.
These sessions are intentionally focused and relaxed, giving us time to create beautiful seasonal portraits without making the session feel like a big production.
The Fall Signature Experience
For families who want more time, variety, and storytelling. This experience gives us more room for movement, connection, individual portraits, sibling moments, and the little candid interactions that happen between the posed images. Not sure which is right for you? I'll help you choose based on what you're hoping to create.
Where Can We Take Fall Family Photos?
One of my favorite things about photographing families in the Triangle is that we have so many different environments to choose from. Depending on the season and your vision, we can create images in settings such as:
Open Fields & Natural Landscapes
Perfect for families who love movement, golden light, and a relaxed outdoor feel. These locations give children room to explore while we create photographs that feel natural and connected.
Wooded Locations
If you're dreaming of a more traditional fall look, wooded areas can give your photographs beautiful depth, texture, and seasonal color.
Gardens & Seasonal Locations
Gardens and landscaped locations can provide a more polished look with beautiful seasonal details.
Farms & Countryside Settings
If you love a cozy, nostalgic fall aesthetic, a farm setting can be beautiful for family portraits.
Unique Seasonal Experiences
Sometimes the most memorable photographs come from choosing something outside the traditional fall-leaf portrait.
That's why my fall offerings may include specially planned seasonal locations and experiences throughout the Triangle.
The best location isn't necessarily the one with the most colorful trees. It's the one that fits your family and the kind of photographs you want to create.
What Should We Wear for Fall Family Photos?
This is one of the questions I hear most often. My biggest advice? Don't try to make everyone match. Instead, think about coordinating. Choose a color palette and let each person's outfit have its own personality.
For fall photographs, beautiful options can include:
- Cream
- Ivory
- Oatmeal
- Camel
- Rust
- Terracotta
- Brown
- Olive
- Sage
- Dusty blue
- Burgundy
- Soft neutrals
Textures can also make a huge difference.
Knits, denim, corduroy, linen, flowing dresses, textured sweaters, and layered pieces can add depth and warmth to your photographs. And remember that your children need to be comfortable enough to move.
If they can't run, sit, hug, or play comfortably in their outfit, they'll probably let us know!
Need help choosing outfits?
My clients have access to Style & Select, my wardrobe guidance service designed to make choosing outfits easier.
I can help you think through colors, textures, styling, and how everything will photograph together.
You don't have to figure it all out alone.
What Happens During a Fall Family Photography Session?
You don't need to know how to pose. Seriously. I'll guide you. My sessions are a combination of gentle posing, movement, interaction, and candid moments. We'll create beautiful portraits where everyone is looking at the camera, but we'll also step away from the traditional “everyone stand still and smile” approach.
Your children might:
- Walk with you
- Run through the grass
- Hold your hand
- Snuggle
- Laugh
- Play with their siblings
- Get a little silly
- Explore the location
And I'll photograph those moments too. I'll give you direction throughout the session so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands or where to stand. But I'll also give your family room to simply be together. The goal? photographs that look beautiful and feel like your family.
What If My Kids Don't Cooperate?
This is probably one of the biggest worries parents have. And as a mom myself, I completely understand. Your children don't have to behave perfectly for us to create beautiful photographs. In fact, some of the most meaningful images happen when children are allowed to move and be themselves.
If someone needs a break, we take a break.
If someone wants to run, we can use that.
If siblings start laughing, I want to photograph it.
If your toddler suddenly decides they don't want to look at the camera, we'll work with it.
There is no need to spend the entire session saying:
“Smile!”
“Look here!”
“Stop moving!”
Let me handle the direction.
Your job is to connect with your family.
What About the Weather?
Fall weather in North Carolina can be unpredictable. One day can feel like summer and the next can feel like autumn.
That's why I continuously watch the forecast as your session approaches. For outdoor sessions, I look at more than just the chance of rain. I'm also watching temperature, wind, humidity, storm activity, and the overall conditions at your session time.
And cloudy weather is completely okay. You do not need a perfectly sunny day for beautiful family photographs.
Cloudy skies can create soft, flattering light and beautiful skin tones. Some of my favorite sessions have happened under a soft, overcast sky. If the weather is safe and comfortable, we can often create beautiful images even when the sky isn't bright blue.
And if the weather truly isn't cooperating, I'll communicate with you and help determine the best plan.
How to Prepare for Your Fall Session
A few simple things can make your session much easier.
The night before: Get a good night's sleep.
The day of: Drink plenty of water and eat normally.
Before leaving: Make sure clothing is steamed or ironed, shoes are clean, and everyone is comfortable.
Most importantly: Don't arrive stressed. Give yourself plenty of time to get ready and travel.
Your session should feel like something you get to enjoy—not another thing you have to rush through.
Fall Family Photos Are About More Than the Season
The leaves will change. Your children will grow. Their little personalities will change. The way they fit into your arms will change.
One day you'll look back at these photographs and remember not only what they looked like, but exactly who they were at this age. That's why I believe family photography is so valuable. We're not just documenting a beautiful fall afternoon.
We're documenting your family in this particular chapter of your life.
