Studio Newborn Session Preparation Guide

Thank you for choosing me to photograph your newborn and family. Studio newborn sessions are designed to be calm, gentle, and baby-led, with plenty of time built in for feeding, soothing, and breaks as needed.

Below is everything you need to know to arrive relaxed and prepared.

When to Schedule

Studio newborn sessions are ideally scheduled when your baby is 5–10 days old, as this is when babies are typically sleepiest and easiest to gently pose.

That said, it is absolutely okay to schedule your session between 2–4 weeks old. At this stage, sessions focus more on wrapped poses, which are comfortable, safe, and work beautifully for slightly older newborns.

Every baby is different, and the session will always follow your baby’s needs.

What to Wear

Family Outfits

Soft, neutral tones photograph best in the studio and help create timeless, cohesive images.

Recommended colors:

  • Cream, ivory, beige
  • Soft whites
  • Light taupe
  • Muted blush or soft pastels

Please avoid:

  • Bright or bold colors
  • Large logos or heavy patterns
  • Neon tones

Bare feet or neutral shoes photograph best and keep the look natural.

Baby Styling

For the family portion of the session, feel free to dress your baby in:

  • A favorite outfit
  • A special onesie
  • A wrap you love

If needed, we can always transition your baby into a neutral studio wrap to match the family color palette seamlessly.

All newborn wraps, headbands, and simple props are provided.

Color options available include:

  • Neutrals: cream, ivory, beige, soft gray
  • Earth tones / boho: oatmeal, warm browns, muted sage
  • Pastels: soft pinks, blush, lilac
  • For boys: creams, warm taupe, soft blue-gray, muted sage

Please let me know your color preference ahead of time so everything can be styled and ready for your session.

Session Flow

To keep the session smooth and comfortable for everyone, we follow a gentle flow:

  1. Family & Sibling Portraits
Please plan to arrive on time and fully ready to photograph, as we will begin with family images right away. Newborn sessions can be long and tiring, and starting promptly helps avoid adding extra time for siblings.
  2. Parent + Baby Images
Soft, connected portraits with mom, dad, and baby.
  3. Baby-Only Images
Wrapped newborn poses and styled setups.

How to Prepare Baby

  • Please feed your baby before leaving home, making sure baby is well-fed and burped.
  • Bringing pumped milk in a bottle or formula can be extremely helpful during the session. This is completely optional, and I fully respect every mother’s feeding choices — it’s simply something many families find helpful.
  • If your baby uses a pacifier, please bring it (even if they don’t usually take one).

Please bring:

  • Extra diapers
  • Extra baby clothes
  • Milk or formula

Some sessions take longer than expected depending on the baby, so having extras helps everyone stay relaxed.

Sibling Tips

  • Talk to siblings ahead of time about being gentle and helping with the baby.
  • Bring snacks, small treats, books, or an iPad to help keep older siblings engaged.
  • For families who live nearby, some parents choose to have dad and siblings leave or take a break after the family portion of the session. This is completely optional and works well for some families.

What to Expect

You do not need to worry about:

  • Posing
  • Baby cooperation
  • Knowing what to do in front of the camera

My role is to guide you gently, adjust as needed, and create a calm, comfortable environment where your family can simply be present.

If you have any questions before your session, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I can’t wait to create these memories for you and your family.

Warmly,
Luciana
