Newborn In-Home Session Preparation Guide

I am so excited to document this incredibly special season for your family. Newborn sessions are relaxed, baby-led, and focused on preserving all of those tiny, fleeting details. A little preparation helps everything flow smoothly — so here’s everything you need to know.

1. Keep the House Warm & Cozy

Newborns are happiest when they’re warm.

Please set your thermostat to 75–78°F about 30 minutes before I arrive. Even if it feels warm to you, this keeps baby sleepy and comfortable — especially during wrapped or diaper-only poses.

If you have a small space heater, feel free to have it nearby as well.

2. Let the Natural Light In

Light is everything

  • Open all blinds and curtains in rooms with large windows.
  • Turn off overhead lights and lamps (they create yellow tones).
  • We’ll typically use the master bedroom, nursery, and sometimes the living room — whichever has the best window light.

Don’t worry if your home isn’t “perfectly lit.” I’ll find the best light in your space.

3. Declutter Key Areas

You do NOT need a spotless house.

Just focus on clearing:

  • Nightstands
  • Dressers
  • Kitchen counters
  • Living room tables

If we’re using the bed, please have neutral bedding (white, cream, beige, or soft tones work beautifully).

A quick tidy makes a big difference in photos.

4. What to Wear

Soft, neutral tones photograph best and keep the focus on your connection.

For Baby:

  • A simple neutral onesie
  • A swaddle or wrap
  • Diaper only (for some images)

For Mom:

  • Cream, beige, soft pastels, or earth tones
  • Flowy dresses, cozy knits, or simple tops
  • Avoid bold patterns or bright colors

For Dad & Siblings:

  • Neutral shirts
  • Soft textures
  • Coordinated (not matching) tones

Keep everything simple and timeless.

5. Feed Baby Right Before I Arrive

A full baby = a sleepy baby

Please plan to:

  • Feed baby just before the session begins
  • Have extra diapers, wipes, and a pacifier nearby (even if baby rarely takes one)

We will pause anytime baby needs to eat or be soothed. There is no rush.

6. Have Special Items Ready

If you’d like to incorporate meaningful items, have them nearby:

  • Name blankets
  • Heirloom pieces
  • Ultrasound photos
  • Special stuffed animals
  • Announcement signs

Keep it minimal — one or two items is perfect.

7. Relax & Trust the Process

This session is meant to feel calm, slow, and natural.

Babies may:

  • Need to be fed multiple times (bottle feed helps - if possible)
  • Want to be held
  • Stay awake
  • Cry (it’s completely normal!)

I follow baby’s lead the entire time. My goal is to create a stress-free experience for you while capturing images that feel authentic, joyful, and timeless.

You don’t need to perform — just love on your baby.

What to Expect

  • Sessions typically last 1-2 hours
  • Some of breaks for diaper change/feed
  • Gentle posing with safety always first
  • A relaxed, baby-led flow

This season is fleeting. The tiny fingers, the wrinkly toes, the way they curl into you — it all changes so quickly.

Take a deep breath. I’ve got you
